Does anyone else there quilt? I've always wanted to learn, and am finally taking a course. I've got 2 lessons left and will soon be finished my FIRST QUILT!!!! yay! It's queen size. Will post a pic when it's done..... (oh no, I can't post pics here for some reason.....) :0(

Winter reading recommendations

I don't know how things are where you guys live, but when winter rolls around in my city, I don't do much in the way of leaving my home. (There's a reason I live three blocks from where I work.) As it's nearly refuse-to-leave-the-house time, I'm looking for some book recommendations -- preferably non-fiction, preferably vegan-y and/or animal rights-y. Aaand GO!

One of our babies ripped her nail off a back paw, while running around the yard. It happened one week ago and we thought it was healing (the toe wasn't hurt, but it's as though her nail was cut off right at the base of the toe). It's started bleeding again and she didn't seem herself yesterday. Not sure if the vet could really do anything....it does not look infected. Any advice?

Cruelty-Free Soap For Sensitive Skin?

I have dermatitis, meaning my skin likes to get red, itchy and peeling (but not necessarily dry). I have to be super careful about what I put on it. I've tried Dr Bronner's soaps, even the unscented kind, and they're a bit too drying on me. So far the only soap my skin has been able to tolerate is Dove unscented... but Dove is owned by Unilever, and they test on animals. Not cool.

Can anyone recommend a sensitive skin soap that isn't tested or has animal...

New Kitten

I went and met my new kitten today, she is gorgeous. Long haired, black with a tiny white star on her chest, I get to bring her home in 3 - 4 weeks. Her name will be Baba, it means grandmother, and when she's bad I'll call her Bubba

Does anyone cook for their canines? I recently visited a naturopathic vet with Sydney due to a diagnosis of cancer. She really was negative about foods on the market, but I didn't talk to her much about it..... Syd has been eating vegetarian dry foods since I rescued her. This vet claimed that dogs are scavengers and need meat..... hmmm?

Now, another one of our girls is sick. Haley (boxer) had to be hospitalized yesterday with pancreatitis. I'm really starting to...

Defying Gravity

Hey, did anyone else catch this new show on TV? I'm hooked!! It's a mix of sci fi and good 'ole soap-like drama. Has aired once - a two hour episode and I already have a feel for the characters. Usually, I find that at the beginning of a series, characters seem a bit stiff until the actors get more comfortable with who they are going to be. I think they've done a great job getting started!

Athletic shoes

I've bought a pair of Champion running shoes from payless tonight with all man made material tag. Out of curiousity, I've browsed their american site and found the same pair has leather, rubber, and man made materials listed on the website.
Normally I've seen a leather tag on most of their shoes but this ones (and another pair) don't have it. Do I trust the tag or the us website description?

I watched an episode last night that got me thinking. A couple had lost their beloved dog and got a new one. They had lots of problems with the new one and still mourned their other dog. I saw the trailer for Julie & Julia, and Meryl Streep looks and sounds amazing as Julia Child. That prompted me to rent "The French Chef," Julia Child's original TV show from 1961.

Oh . . . my . . . gawd . . . It's hilarious.

She spills cream. She drops food, scrapes it up and puts it back in the pan. She forgets where she put her tools. She flips pancakes and they end up all over the stove. And she just plows on and keeps going. It was the most unintentionally...

Sydney had to have a lump removed on Thursday. She's recovering well from the surgery. Now, we're waiting to hear that the lump is benign. All positive thoughts sent to the Universe for her are greatly appreciated!

Okay, I love animals. But the neighbour is driving me up the tree (no pun intended). She has two cats that live in the garage. Every morning when she leaves for work the opens the garage door a crack so that the cats can go in and out. Now, her two cats, my other neighbour's cat and another neighbour's cat sort of live in my yard. I'm a bird watcher with several bird feeders in my yard and the cats always hang around there.

But, the first neighbour's cats bother me the most,...

I'm in reality show heaven right now, pretty much. It's sick, I know, but I've got: Celebrity Apprentice, American Idol, Hell's Kitchen, AND America's Next Top Model going on these days. (The boyfriend's got Survivor and Amazing Race on top of that, but I can't quite convince myself to watch those, for some reason.)

I have been working out at home for quite a few years and have tried pretty much everything. Recently, I stumbled upon a new series, "Fitness for Indie Rockers". There is a yoga, a pilates and a cardio dvd and all are really fun. I get bored quick but these hold my interest because they each offer various soundtracks (punk, indie or metal). The instructor is not the usual skinny blonde in a leotard. She has a realistic body and is covered in tattoos. The dvds have a DIY feel.
