I'm a permanent resident and for no particular reason never took out citizenship. It's not important to me either way, it's just something that doesn't enter my everyday life. Well, last fall I went back home for my mom's 70th and realized my resident card was about to expire. Every few days I would think about getting around to renew it. I travel very rarely so that wasn't on my top priority list either. Well today I received news my estranged dad has bladder cancer, inoperable, advanced stages. So here am I in a panic filling out forms. Well, one of them cannot be downloaded from the web, must order original. Darn, probably 1-2 weeks. Then fill in everthing, pay my money and send in. Another week. Then there's an approx 3 months delay. Meaning, today, applications received on or before April 20th have a 67 day delay. That means all together a good 3 months till I can go and pick up the card (yes, must travel to Toronto to pick it up).
This is absolutely INSANE. What's my alternative? Go without it and apply for a travel visa while I'm at home. And oh, gotta go to Paris for that and they have right now a 3 week delay. INSANITY. If I was a simple tourist coming to Canada I could get on a plane today and be here on the same day, end of story.
Is this why those idiots make a lot of money? Takes a big salary to make other people's life miserable???
end of rant

My fond memories of Charlie are his gifts to me for life.
