I just finished "Stardust" by Neil Gaiman, and I made sure I got the one with the original illustrations.

I also just finished "The Ladies of Grace Adieu" by Susanna Clarke (of "Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell" fame).

Can you tell that I'm just counting down the days to the next "Harry Potter?"
I've had it on order for ages.

I first heard about Harry Potter a bit before the 4th one came out.
Of all things, I was taking a Kumihimo class (Japanese braiding) at a weaving convention, and the teacher was this funny British guy who adored Harry Potter, and then several of the grandmothers in my class said they loved Harry Potter, too (stole their grandkid's copies to read) and that got me intrigued.

So, my nephew was about 9 or 10 at the time, and we bought the first one for him and told him that we (hubby and I) wanted to read it, too.
So he had to hurry up and read it and tell us if it was any good.
If it was, we'd buy him the second one, and swap him for the first one.

He'd never read a novel before, and so he put it off.
My sister finally told him to sit down and read for 1/2 hour.
Well, 2 hours later he's still reading it.
He finished it. Loved it. And we bought him book two, and we read book one.

By the end of the summer, he had read all FOUR of the first ones. That's all that was out at the time.
We got him hooked on reading.

They're very funny, and well written.
The first one is quite the children's book, but they get more adult as the series goes on.
Then again, I'm a sucker for a well written children's story.
