flu shots |

Mom and I went in this morning so that mom could get the regular seasonal flu shot and the H1N1 shot, the health unit was doing a public health clinic at our
civic center. All the fliers sent out said it was for everybody, and it was from 8am to 6pm, we get there and find out they changed it to 9am to 7pm, and only
for at risk/high risk people. I can't have the shots because of allergies, but we figured mom would be considered high risk because she has only one
working lung and asthma, they turned her away because she is over 65(she's 74), saying that she should have some natural immunity to H1N1 from previous
exposure at some point in her lifetime, if she had been under 65 they would have given her the shot. They wouldn't even give her the regular flu shot.

Can you get a shot from your GP?

Our GP wants mom to have the shot, he has ordered them but delivery keeps getting delayed because of the demand. Howie doesn't know when he'll get
them, that's why he sent her to the public clinic. Mom phoned his office when we got home, they have put her on a contact list for whenever they get the
vaccines.

That sucks for your mom, for sure!
According to the news, people in Edmonton are supposed to expect four hour long line-ups when they go to get vaccinated. On a flu shot note, however, the next person who tries to make me feel like I'm 'letting down my community' by opting out of getting the H1N1 vaccine is going to get a swift kick in the face. |

You go girl, I feel the same way! Andy Berry on CBC's metro morning show's been saying it. I feel like calling in and complaining about his biased
views.

Anyone older than 50 or 60 was probably exposed to the bad flu going around 50 years ago.
It was a relative of the H1N1 swine flu, so they should already have the antibodies for it. That's a plus. Berna |

Hahaha, that's so cute. It's been reported here on the radio that in Vancouver, I think, a woman who was coughing on the bus was asked by another
passenger to leave. Talk about paranoia.

LOL!!! Love that pic!!!
I guess it's just as well that mom didn't get the shots yesterday. She ended up in emergency this morning with severe shoulder, side and back pain, she was up half the night with it. They ruled out heart problems, and diagnosed her with badly pulled muscles, and gastritis(sp?). She injured her shoulder a few weeks ago and before it was properly healed, she re-injured it worse than before. The dr. figures she has a small hernia in her diaphragm(?), and that air/gas is escaping up into the shoulder area, making the problem even worse. She's in alot of pain, I can relate to it, years ago I had a series of gas attacks that were so bad they tore a hole in my diaphragm and the same thing would happen. I couldn't drink anything fizzy for several years, everytime I tried, I would get a horrible pain in my shoulder.

Wow..... poor Mom..... sounds painful.
I'm with those who aren't getting the shot. They are not vegan..... two of my colleauges took their kids for the shots this week and they all ended up getting sick (reacting to the shot)... spiking fevers, coughing. bleh. I'll take my chances, Andy Berry!
All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.

Mom was still in too much pain last night so we went back to emergency. They kept her overnight so they could do more for the pain, and are sending her down to
Campbell River today for a CT scan. The Dr. isn't sure what's going on, he doesn't think it's life threatening, he's wondering about
gallbladder, and mentioned shingles, hopefully we'll know more tonight.
